It's the autobiography of a street drinker who was saved by chess (he swapped one addiction for another). He learned to play in prison, and went on to win tournaments.

They made a film of it in 1990 with Mark Rylance. Here's a bit of it

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dpLN72q-hE

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2008/aug/05/biographyPeter Chrisphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11206688095197843271noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1157342843002612388.post-14894559104330209062016-11-07T10:53:24.451-06:002016-11-07T10:53:24.451-06:00I've been playing on Chess.com mostly. It's a great site and easy-to-use app. Also playing against some friends on the Chess with Friends app.

The main advice he gave me was to find an opening I like and stick with it. We also went over some examples of forks, skewers, pins, and discovered checks. Stuff like that. I've also found that I'm a much better player when I take as much time as possible to review each move. In a quick, timed match I'm prone to be blind to certain things or make moves that have no intention behind them. I know the basics of chess so am sometimes enlisted to play against children of friends. Just happened a week or two ago and as usually happens I was badly beaten--by a nine year old.

I actually like chess in literature, etc. more than I do playing it, which is how I feel about I read The Defense and enjoyed it a lot. There was also an interesting movie made of it.

Arturo Perez-Reverte's The Flanders Panel is also all about chess. Not quite Nabokov, but still interesting as I recall.

Thanks for a thought provoking piece and good luck winning a game against the Turkish chessmaster. You are obviously a far better sport than I am. seana grahamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03774794086733027289noreply@blogger.com
